There comes a time when the band you’ve followed for decades—your absolute favourite, the one that shaped your taste, got you through the worst, soundtracked your best moments—starts feeling like they’re on borrowed time. Not necessarily because their music’s lost its magic and they’re not as innovative and creative as they used to be, but because, well, they’re getting older. And every new album could be their last.
Today is one of those days. Parasomnia is out, Dream Theater’s latest release, and who knows how many more we’ll get. So if you love them—really love them—don’t let this be just another album release. Make it an experience.
Go to the record store—yes, I’m serious
Sure, you could just stream it. But where’s the ritual in that? There’s something special—sacred, even—about heading to an actual record shop, picking up the CD or vinyl, holding it in your hands. The artwork, the weight of it, that scent of freshly printed liner notes. It’s the kind of thing that makes music feel personal again, not just another file in a playlist.

And let’s be real, seeing a new album from an ageing band on the shelves? It’s a reminder that they’re still here. Still making music. Still giving us something to hold onto.
Set the scene: no half-measures
You wouldn’t watch a masterpiece film on a cracked phone screen with tinny audio, so why would you let this album be reduced to a background listen on your laptop’s speakers? Give it the respect it deserves. Get the best setup you have—whether that’s vinyl through a warm-sounding turntable, a solid pair of headphones, or speakers that can make your walls tremble.
Then, sit down. No distractions. Just you and the music. Let every riff, every drum fill, every vocal melody sink in.
Read the booklet, it’s part of the story
Lyrics, artwork, liner notes—this is where the band lets you in. Maybe there’s a dedication to a lost friend. Maybe there are a few easter eggs through the songs you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Maybe there’s just a bizarre in-joke hidden in the credits.
Whatever it is, this is the kind of stuff that streaming doesn’t give you. The little details that make you feel closer to the band, like you’re part of something bigger than just the music.
Soak it in—there won’t be many more
It’s a bittersweet thing, isn’t it? The realisation that your favourite band won’t be here forever. But that’s exactly why every new album matters. Why every release day should feel like an event.
One day, there won’t be another Dream Theater album waiting in the wings. One day, the tour announcements will stop. But today? Today, they’re still here. Still playing. Still creating.
So cherish it. Put the record on. Turn it up. Let yourself feel everything. Because this isn’t just an album—it’s a moment you won’t get back.
